How to Prepare for an At-Home Blood Test
An at-home blood test only takes about ten minutes, but a little preparation decides whether your results are accurate the first time. This guide covers fasting, hydration, medicines and how to set up the collection area before our phlebotomist arrives in Lucknow.
Quick checklist
- Fast 8–12 hours if your test requires it (water is fine)
- Drink 2–3 glasses of plain water in the hour before collection
- Keep your prescription, ID and previous reports ready
- Wear a loose, half-sleeve top
- Choose a well-lit chair or bed with a side table
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours and heavy exercise the same morning
1. Fasting for a blood test: who needs it and for how long
Fasting means no food or calorie-containing drinks for a set window before your sample is taken. It matters because eating temporarily raises blood sugar and triglycerides, which can push an otherwise normal report into a "high" range.
- Fasting blood sugar (FBS), lipid profile, insulin: 8–12 hours of fasting. Do not go beyond 14 hours — over-fasting also distorts results.
- HbA1c, thyroid (TSH/T3/T4), CBC, vitamin D, vitamin B12: no fasting needed in most cases.
- Liver function (LFT) and kidney function (KFT): usually non-fasting, but follow your doctor's note if one is given.
The easiest way to manage a fast is to book an early-morning slot, finish dinner by 9–10 PM, and sleep through most of the fasting window.
2. Hydration makes the draw faster and less painful
Dehydrated veins collapse and are harder to find, which is the most common reason a collection takes a second attempt. Plain water does not break a fast for lab purposes.
- Drink 2–3 glasses of plain water in the hour before your slot.
- Skip tea, coffee, juice, milk, soft drinks and chewing gum while fasting.
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours — it affects liver and lipid values.
- Skip heavy workouts the morning of the test; they raise certain enzymes.
3. Medicines and supplements
Never stop a prescribed medicine on your own to "clean up" a report. Instead, tell the phlebotomist what you took in the last 24 hours so it can be noted with the sample. Ask your doctor in advance about biotin supplements (can skew thyroid results), high-dose vitamin C, steroids and blood thinners.
4. Setting up the collection area at home
Our technician carries sterile, single-use needles, vacutainers, an ice box and labels — you only need to prepare the space:
- Pick a well-lit spot near a window or under a bright light.
- Keep a chair with an armrest, or a bed, plus a side table for the kit.
- Clear a path to the seating area and keep pets in another room.
- Wear a loose half-sleeve top so the arm is easy to access.
- Keep your ID, doctor's prescription and previous reports on the table.
- Share the OTP from your booking with the technician before collection begins.
5. During and after the collection
The draw itself takes two to three minutes. Sit still, breathe normally and look away if needles make you uneasy. Afterwards, press the cotton swab for two minutes without bending your arm, then eat something if you were fasting. Avoid lifting heavy weights with that arm for a couple of hours, and drink water through the day.
6. When your report arrives
Most MediHub.1 reports are delivered digitally within 12–24 hours of collection, depending on the panel. You can view and download them from the Reports section of your dashboard, and share them with your doctor directly from the app. Always read results with a doctor rather than self-diagnosing from reference ranges.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours should I fast before a blood test?
8 to 12 hours for fasting glucose, lipid profile and insulin tests. Plain water is allowed throughout.
Can I drink water before an at-home blood test?
Yes — water keeps your veins full and makes the draw quicker and more comfortable. Only calorie-containing drinks break the fast.
Should I stop my regular medicines?
No. Continue them unless your doctor says otherwise, and tell the technician what you have taken in the last 24 hours.
What if I accidentally ate during the fasting window?
Tell us before collection. It is usually better to reschedule by a few hours than to submit a sample that will need repeating.
